‘Black Light’ is the sixth studio album by English electronic duo Groove Armada. It combines the more mainstream-oriented sound of its predecessor, ’Soundboy Rock’, with the rock spirit of ’Lovebox’, and the band makes use of 1980s synthesisers for the first time.
The album is influenced by David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Gary Numan, New Order and Roxy Music. The vocal collaborations on the album include Bryan Ferry, Fenech-Soler, Jess Larrabee, Nick Littlemore, Saint Saviour and Will Young
Released in 2010, this record marked a sharp left turn for English duo Groove Armada, swapping the sun-drenched breaks of their early output for something darker, colder, and more structured. Drawing heavy influence from 80s synth pop, glam, and new wave-think New Order, Bowie and Gary Numan-the album built on the pop-minded flourishes of their previous work but filtered them through a sleeker, more nocturnal palette. Opener ‘Look Me In The Eyes Sister’ and the Saint Saviour-led ‘Just For Tonight’ and ‘I Won’t Kneel’ all pulse with clean-lined synths and chilly romanticism, while ‘Shameless’ brings in Bryan Ferry himself for a wink to Roxy Music’s legacy. Elsewhere, Fenech-Soler and Will Young lend vocal sheen, and the production glows with retro-futurist polish-vintage gear used with purpose, not pastiche. A creative peak and a late-era curveball, it’s a strong reminder of the duo’s ability to shapeshift without losing their core identity.
